One of my sons asked me yesterday, “How do you know when enough is enough?” I have often overworked sketches or painting to the point that I end up hating the piece. I will tell myself, just one more tree, or just one more highlight, but in the end I add to the point that it is overwhelming. Those paintings and sketches usually end up deleted or thrown away because in the end I am just not happy with them. If I have learned anything throughout time, it is that sometimes less says a lot more. In order to appreciate the natural beauty in things, sometimes you have to take away the distractions. Most of the pieces that I like are simple. The way a skyline meets the horizon, or a simple bird perched on a log can say so much. So, I guess my answer to my son is this, enough is enough when the beauty is there and nothing else could enhance it. Have a great day everyone!
When is enough, enough?
